Let's take this a step further.  If you purchased one of the popular PDA's that has wireless built in (as low as $ 160.00) you can roam your business and view the camera output on your PDA. I personally own the HP Ipaq rx1955 (purchased off of ebay for under $ 200.00).  These 802.11 wireless PDA's can surf the internet as well as access your camera video.

There are strict local, state and government laws against audio surveillance without pre-notifying people that you are doing so.  Whether at your home or at your business, notification has to be given.  "Audio monitoring on these premisis"  or similiar signage has to be posted in clear view at the entrance to a business that does so.  Though a sign in your home is not needed, all people in your home that are subject to being recorded have to be notified in advance. 

In general, video surveillance is legal in the U.S. without consent.  There are laws against placing cameras in certain locations, ie. bedrooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, changing/dressing rooms, etc.
